Installing Kubernetes

If you opt to deploy PolarDB-X with K8s, you need to pre-install a Kubernetes cluster. Kubernetes offers various installation methods. You can either follow the procedures provided in the official Kubernetes documentation or directly utilize the Kubernetes cluster services offered by Alibaba Cloud's Container Service (ACK). This document will guide you on installing a Kubernetes cluster using the kubeadm tool.

Installing Kubernetes with kubeadm

It is recommended to install Kubernetes components from Alibaba Cloud's image repository, using version v1.21.0 or higher. The container images for Kubernetes must correspond with the version of Kubernetes components you install. If you decide to install a version other than v1.21.0, you must consult the documentation to prepare the relevant images.

Preparation

Configuring the Yum Repository

On the deployment machine (ops), edit the kubernetes.repo configuration file:

vi $HOME/kubernetes.repo

Input the following content:

[kubernetes]
name=Kubernetes
baseurl=https://mirrors.aliyun.com/kubernetes/yum/repos/kubernetes-el7-x86_64/
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
repo_gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=https://mirrors.aliyun.com/kubernetes/yum/doc/yum-key.gpg https://mirrors.aliyun.com/kubernetes/yum/doc/rpm-package-key.gpg

If the deployment environment is an Alibaba Cloud ECS server without internet access, you should use the following configuration content:

Note: Replace https://mirrors.aliyun.com/ with the internal domain name http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/

[kubernetes]
name=Kubernetes
baseurl=http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/kubernetes/yum/repos/kubernetes-el7-x86_64/
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
repo_gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/kubernetes/yum/doc/yum-key.gpg http://mirrors.cloud.aliyuncs.com/kubernetes/yum/doc/rpm-package-key.gpg

Copy the configuration file to all servers:

ansible -i ${ini_file} all -m synchronize -a " src=$HOME/kubernetes.repo dest=/etc/yum.repos.d/ " -u root

Directory Mapping

Docker's data directory at /var/lib/docker stores image files, whereas Kubernetes stores container files in the /var/lib/kubelet directory. It is recommended to symlink these two directories to a data disk. Execute the following commands to create symlinks for both directories:

ansible -i ${ini_file} all -m shell -a " mkdir -p /polarx/kubelet"
ansible -i ${ini_file} all -m shell -a " ln -s /polarx/kubelet /var/lib/kubelet "
ansible -i ${ini_file} all -m shell -a " mkdir -p /polarx/docker "
ansible -i ${ini_file} all -m shell -a " ln -s /polarx/docker /var/lib/docker "

Docker Configuration

Edit the daemon.json file to add the address of your private image repository to the insecure-registries list for HTTP access. Here we use registry:5000 as an example, but you should modify it to your private repository's address.

vi $HOME/daemon.json

Insert the following content:

{
  "exec-opts": ["native.cgroupdriver=systemd"],
  "insecure-registries": ["registry:5000"]
}

Copy the daemon.json file to all servers:

ansible -i ${ini_file} all -m synchronize -a " src=$HOME/daemon.json dest=/etc/docker/daemon.json " -u root

Restart the Docker service:

ansible -i ${ini_file} all -m shell -a " systemctl restart docker "

Verify that the Docker service is running correctly after the restart:

ansible -i ${ini_file} all -m shell -a " systemctl status docker | grep Active "

Installing Kubernetes

Software Installation

Batch install Kubernetes and components:

ansible -i ${ini_file} all -m shell -a " yum install --nogpgcheck -y kubelet-1.21.0 kubeadm-1.21.0 kubectl-1.21.0 "

Starting the Master Node

Select a server to act as the Kubernetes master node. Using ssh, log in:

ssh 192.168.1.105

Execute the kubeadm command, specifying the address of your private image repository:

kubeadm init --image-repository=registry:5000 --kubernetes-version=v1.21.0  \
        --pod-network-cidr=10.244.0.0/16 --v=5

Upon successful initialization, you should see the following output:

Your Kubernetes control-plane has initialized successfully!

...

Then you can join any number of worker nodes by running the following on each as root:

kubeadm join 192.168.1.105:6443 --token wgdbhh.gg93lod64h7u722s \
        --discovery-token-ca-cert-hash sha256:4d88e3b1bec75ce6d0ac011a0c94a01feaa6144682763db9fcaa69adbcd42de5

Adding Worker Nodes

SSH into another server to add it as a worker node:

ssh 192.168.1.102

Execute the kubeadm join command provided by the master node to join the worker node to the Kubernetes cluster:

kubeadm join 192.168.1.105:6443 --token wgdbhh.gg93lod64h7u722s \
        --discovery-token-ca-cert-hash sha256:4d88e3b1bec75ce6d0ac011a0c94a01feaa6144682763db9fcaa69adbcd42de5

Adding Master Nodes

For high availability in a production environment, it is recommended to deploy multiple master nodes within the cluster. Similarly, SSH into the server designated to become another master node:

ssh 192.168.1.106

To join the new master node, simply append the --control-plane option to the kubeadm join command provided earlier by the initial master node:

kubeadm join 192.168.1.105:6443 --token wgdbhh.gg93lod64h7u722s \
        --discovery-token-ca-cert-hash sha256:4d88e3b1bec75ce6d0ac011a0c94a01feaa6144682763db9fcaa69adbcd42de5 \
        --control-plane

Regenerating Tokens

The token provided by the kubeadm join command has an expiration. If it's expired when trying to add nodes, generate a new one like this:

kubeadm token create

To view the generated token:

kubeadm token list

An example of the token list output:

TOKEN TTL EXPIRES USAGES DESCRIPTION EXTRA GROUPS
j47bwk.sz2lv16rbtlhx9ge   23h         2023-03-08T18:40:11+08:00   authentication,signing   <none>                                                     system:bootstrappers:kubeadm:default-node-token

Use the new TOKEN to replace the --token parameter in the original kubeadm join command:

kubeadm join 192.168.1.105:6443 --token j47bwk.sz2lv16rbtlhx9ge \
        --discovery-token-ca-cert-hash sha256:4d88e3b1bec75ce6d0ac011a0c94a01feaa6144682763db9fcaa69adbcd42de5

In this way, you can add nodes to the Kubernetes cluster again.

Configuring kubectl

Install the kubectl client on the deployment machine (ops):

yum install kubectl-1.21.0 -y

To access the Kubernetes cluster with kubectl, configure the $HOME/.kube/config file. The easiest way to set up the configuration is to copy it from the master node to the location mentioned above:

mkdir $HOME/.kube
scp 192.168.1.105:/etc/kubernetes/admin.conf $HOME/.kube/config

Batch copy the kubectl configuration file to other servers:

ansible -i ${ini_file} all -m shell -a " mkdir -p \$HOME/.kube "
ansible -i ${ini_file} all -m synchronize -a " src=$HOME/.kube/config dest=\$HOME/.kube/config "

Verify that the deployment machine (ops) can access the Kubernetes cluster:

kubectl get nodes -o wide

Setting Up the Container Network

Before setting up container networking, the Kubernetes cluster will not function properly. There are multiple container networking solutions available, but this guide will focus on the installation of the basic Calico network.

Editing the Configuration File

Create a YAML configuration file:

vi calico_v3.15.1.yaml

And include the following content:

Configuring Calico Network

Apply the configuration file using the kubectl command:

kubectl apply -f calico_v3.15.1.yaml

Verify that the Calico pods have been created:

kubectl -n kube-system get pods -o wide

After patiently waiting for the pods to reach the "Running" state, check that all Kubernetes nodes are in the "Ready" status:

kubectl get nodes -o wide

Your Kubernetes cluster should now be functioning correctly.

Verifying the Container Network (Optional)

It's recommended to use nginx to confirm that the Kubernetes cluster and container network are operating as expected. First, on the deployment machine (ops), download the nginx image and push it to the private image repository:

# Download the image
docker pull nginx:1.14.2

# Tag the image
docker tag nginx:1.14.2 registry:5000/nginx:1.14.2

# Push to the image repository
docker push registry:5000/nginx:1.14.2

Create an nginx-deploy.yaml file:

vi nginx-deploy.yaml

With the following contents:

apiVersion: apps/v1
kind: Deployment
metadata:
  name: nginx-deployment
  labels:
    app: nginx
spec:
  replicas: 2
  selector:
    matchLabels:
      app: nginx
  template:
    metadata:
      labels:
        app: nginx
    spec:
      nodeSelector:
      affinity:
        podAntiAffinity:
          requiredDuringSchedulingIgnoredDuringExecution:
          - labelSelector:
              matchExpressions:
              - key: app
                operator: In
                values:
                - nginx
            topologyKey: "kubernetes.io/hostname"
      containers:
      - name: nginx
        image: registry:5000/nginx:1.14.2
        ports:
        - containerPort: 80

Deploy the nginx containers:

kubectl apply -f nginx-deploy.yaml

Check the created nginx pods and their IP addresses:

kubectl get pods -o wide

Select a container IP address at random and use the following command to check for connectivity:

curl http://192.168.217.3/ -I

If an HTTP request returns successfully, it indicates that the Kubernetes cluster and container network are currently working properly.
